India's major road races

13 long-established events, described by what they are actually like to run: the course profile, the conditions, and what to train for. Dates are not published here — they move every year, and getting one wrong costs somebody a race.

The shape of the Indian race calendar

It is dictated by weather, and it is short. October through February is when mass-participation road racing is possible across most of the country: the monsoon has cleared, the heat has dropped, and morning temperatures in the big cities are survivable for four hours of running. That compression is why the calendar is crowded — the Delhi Half in October, Ahmedabad in November, Kolkata and Pune in December, Mumbai and Chennai in January, Vadodara and Auroville in February.

The exceptions prove the rule. Bengaluru can hold a major 10K in May because its climate is unlike anywhere else in urban India. Hyderabad runs a marathon in August by accepting monsoon humidity in exchange for cooler air. Ladakh runs in September because at 3,500 metres the problem was never heat.

If you are planning a season, that geography is the plan: build through the monsoon, race from October, and treat March to June as base-building months run before dawn. The training plans are written in weeks rather than dates for exactly that reason — count backwards from the race you actually enter.

Questions about the Indian race calendar

When is the Indian running season?

Broadly October to February. The weather is the reason: from March to June most of the country is too hot for a mass-participation road race, and the monsoon covers June to September. The two significant exceptions on this list are the Hyderabad Marathon in August and the Ladakh Marathon in September, and both work for local climate reasons.

Which is India's biggest marathon?

The Tata Mumbai Marathon, in January, by participation and by profile. The Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon in October assembles the strongest elite field of any Indian road race.

Why does this site not list race dates?

Because they change every year, and a wrong date is actively harmful — it is the kind of error that makes somebody miss a race they trained six months for. Every page here names the month the event traditionally falls in and sends you to the organiser for the actual date.

Why are only a dozen races listed?

India has well over a hundred road races. This list covers only events with a long, continuous history that can be described accurately. A calendar padded with races that may no longer run is worse than a short list that is right.

Every time, pace and physiological figure on this site is computed from a published formula, and the formula is named and shown on the method page. Nothing here is predicted by a model you cannot check. Race details change — always confirm dates, routes and entry with the official organiser. Training guidance is general information, not individual coaching or medical advice.
