The routes

Every one of these is a public place to run that Kolkata runners actually use. Distances are approximate — park perimeters in particular vary by a few hundred metres depending on which path you take, so treat them as a guide and measure your own.

Rabindra Sarobar

Dhakuria, south Kolkata
~3.5 km loop paved and packed-earth lakeside paths

Known simply as the Lakes. A network of paths around the water where the city's running clubs, rowers and swimmers all converge before dawn. The full outer circuit is roughly 3 to 4 km depending on the paths you link.

Maidan

Central Kolkata
~6 km loop grass, earth tracks and perimeter roads

A vast open green between Fort William and the Esplanade. There is no marked route — you choose lines across the grass or run the perimeter roads. Football pitches, horses and morning football coaching all share it.

Eco Park

New Town, Rajarhat
~5 km loop wide paved paths

A very large modern park with long uninterrupted paved circuits, which is exactly what the older parts of the city lack. Ticketed entry with fixed opening hours.

Victoria Memorial surrounds

Central Kolkata
~2 km loop paved paths and roads

The gardens and the roads circling the memorial link naturally into a Maidan run and give it a landmark to aim at.

Subhas Sarobar

Beliaghata
~2 km loop paved lakeside path

The eastern counterpart to Rabindra Sarobar — quieter, smaller and much less known outside its own neighbourhood.

Heat, air and when to actually go out

Climate. Hot and very humid from March to October. The runnable season is short and sharp: mid-November to February.

Air quality. Winter air quality drops into the poor band regularly, driven by traffic and regional smoke. The Maidan and Rabindra Sarobar are better than the arterial roads, but they are not immune.

The timing advice for Kolkata — 05:00–07:00 almost all year. in winter the maidan at first light is one of the best running scenes in india. — is not a preference, it is the difference between a session that helps and one that costs you two days. Running moves several times more air through your lungs than sitting does, so a bad-air morning is a disproportionately bad time to train hard outdoors. The air quality guide sets out what each CPCB band means for a runner, and running in Indian heat covers what humidity does to your pace.
