Dates, entry fees and routes change every year. This page deliberately does not publish a date — a wrong one costs somebody a race they trained six months for. Confirm the current year's date, entry window, fee and course on the official organiser's website before you plan anything around it.

What kind of race it is

If an Indian runner has one race on the calendar, it is usually this one. Entries open months ahead and the popular categories fill. The atmosphere is the draw as much as the course: the whole city comes out along the route, the Sea Link section is closed to traffic for exactly one morning a year, and the finish at CST is as close as Indian running gets to a national occasion.

The course

Flat and fast by any standard, run largely along the seafront and over the Bandra–Worli Sea Link. The one thing that is not flat is the Peddar Road climb in the closing kilometres of the full marathon — a modest hill that arrives at exactly the wrong moment and is talked about far more than its gradient deserves.

Conditions

A January start in the dark. Mumbai in January is the mildest it gets, but it is still humid — a 05:40 start means most of the field is running as the temperature and humidity both climb. Runners from cooler places consistently go out too fast here.

How to approach it

Train for humidity, not for the distance alone. Practise your hydration plan at race pace, start conservatively, and treat the first 10 km as slower than feels right — the Peddar Road climb and the last 5 km punish an aggressive first half far more than the profile suggests.

Training in Mumbai

05:30–07:00. By 08:00 in any month the humidity makes pace meaningless — run by effort, not by watch.
