The Chennai Marathon
A community-run marathon along a coastal city's flattest roads.
Dates, entry fees and routes change every year. This page deliberately does not publish a date — a wrong one costs somebody a race they trained six months for. Confirm the current year's date, entry window, fee and course on the official organiser's website before you plan anything around it.
What kind of race it is
Grown out of Chennai's own running community rather than a promoter's calendar, and it retains that character — strong volunteer support, an early start, and a field that knows each other. A well-regarded, unpretentious race.
The course
Flat. Chennai has almost no elevation to offer, and the course uses the coastal and arterial roads accordingly.
Conditions
A January date puts it in the coolest window Chennai has, but humidity is still the defining variable. Starts are early for good reason.
How to approach it
Flat and humid is a combination that flatters the first half and punishes the second. Run to heart rate or effort rather than pace after 25 km, and drink to a plan you have practised.
Distances offered
Category names and cut-off times vary between editions. The event is run by Chennai Runners / The Chennai Marathon organising team — find their official site for the current year's details, and cross-check against the AIMS race calendar. This page does not link to an organiser URL it cannot verify.

Training in Chennai
05:00–06:30. The beach at sunrise is the city's running ritual; by 08:00 the sand is already unpleasant.

Race characteristics are described from the event's established, published character; no date, fee or course guarantee is made here. Every time, pace and physiological figure on this site is computed from a published formula, and the formula is named and shown on the method page. Nothing here is predicted by a model you cannot check. Race details change — always confirm dates, routes and entry with the official organiser.
