The routes
Every one of these is a public place to run that Chennai runners actually use. Distances are approximate — park perimeters in particular vary by a few hundred metres depending on which path you take, so treat them as a guide and measure your own.
Marina Beach promenade
The service road along the Marina gives a long, flat, uninterrupted run with the sea beside you. Run on the paved side for pace work and on the firm sand near the waterline for strength — the soft dry sand higher up will wreck a calf.
Elliot's Beach
Smaller, calmer and more residential than the Marina, and the natural start point for south Chennai runners heading down the coast road.
Anna Nagar Tower Park
A well-used neighbourhood loop with the tower at its centre — short, safe, and the default for anyone who does not want to drive to the coast.
Nehru Park
A compact central park loop. Useful for short easy runs; too small for a long session.
Besant Nagar to Kottivakkam coast road
Long straight coastal running once you are clear of Besant Nagar, and the route many of the city's marathon groups use for their long runs. Traffic builds fast after 07:00.

Heat, air and when to actually go out
Climate. Hot and humid for most of the year, with a brief cooler window from December to February. Heat management is not optional here.
Air quality. Better than the northern metros for most of the year. Coastal wind helps; the worst air is at road level in the industrial north and around Diwali.
The timing advice for Chennai — 05:00–06:30. the beach at sunrise is the city's running ritual; by 08:00 the sand is already unpleasant. — is not a preference, it is the difference between a session that helps and one that costs you two days. Running moves several times more air through your lungs than sitting does, so a bad-air morning is a disproportionately bad time to train hard outdoors. The air quality guide sets out what each CPCB band means for a runner, and running in Indian heat covers what humidity does to your pace.
