The routes

Every one of these is a public place to run that Puducherry runners actually use. Distances are approximate — park perimeters in particular vary by a few hundred metres depending on which path you take, so treat them as a guide and measure your own.

Rock Beach promenade (Goubert Avenue)

White Town
~1.5 km one way paved seafront promenade

Closed to vehicles from evening through to early morning, which makes it a genuinely traffic-free 1.5 km strip along the sea. Most runners lap it; the French Quarter streets behind extend it.

White Town grid

French Quarter
~3 km loop quiet colonial streets

Low traffic, flat, shaded and easy to navigate — good for an easy 5 to 8 km linking back to the promenade.

Auroville and the ECR north

Auroville / East Coast Road
~10 km one way quiet roads and red-earth tracks

North of the town the roads run through Auroville's forest plantations on soft red earth — this is where the Auroville Marathon is run and it is superb early-morning trail-style running.

Heat, air and when to actually go out

Climate. Hot and humid most of the year with a north-east monsoon in October and November. December to February is excellent.

Air quality. Clean — small, coastal and low-industry.

The timing advice for Puducherry — 05:30–07:00, while the promenade is still closed to vehicles. — is not a preference, it is the difference between a session that helps and one that costs you two days. Running moves several times more air through your lungs than sitting does, so a bad-air morning is a disproportionately bad time to train hard outdoors. The air quality guide sets out what each CPCB band means for a runner, and running in Indian heat covers what humidity does to your pace.

On the mornings the reading says stay in, the session still has to happen somewhere: indoor running by city, gym by gym with researched fee ranges — the same activity, moved under a roof.
