The routes

Vetal Tekdi

Kothrud / Law College Road
~5 km loop rocky hill trail and dirt track

The city's best-known hill. A network of trails climbing from several entry points, with real gradient and rock underfoot. Trail shoes, daylight and a known route — it is easy to end up further out than intended.

Taljai Tekdi

Sahakar Nagar / Dhankawadi
~4 km loop dirt trail through forest plantation

Softer and greener than Vetal, with a network of shaded tracks. The south side's default hill run.

Savitribai Phule Pune University campus

Ganeshkhind
~3 km loop campus roads

Wide, tree-lined campus roads with gentle undulation and little traffic early in the morning. Access is subject to the university's own rules.

Law College Road / ARAI hill approach

Erandwane
~4 km one way road with footpath

The road that Pune's running groups use for hill repeats, climbing steadily away from the city. Traffic is light at 06:00 and heavy by 08:30.

Saras Baug and Peshwe Park surrounds

Central Pune
~2 km loop paved paths and park roads

Flat, central and busy — the easy-run option when you do not want to climb.

Heat, air and when to actually go out

Climate. Milder than Mumbai, with cool mornings from November to February and a pleasant monsoon. Summer afternoons are hot but mornings stay manageable.

Air quality. Moderate, worse along the main corridors at rush hour. The tekdis (hills) sit above the worst of it.

The timing advice for Pune — 05:30–07:30. hill running here is best done in the first hour of light. — is not a preference, it is the difference between a session that helps and one that costs you two days. Running moves several times more air through your lungs than sitting does, so a bad-air morning is a disproportionately bad time to train hard outdoors. The air quality guide sets out what each CPCB band means for a runner, and running in Indian heat covers what humidity does to your pace.
