The routes
Every one of these is a public place to run that Shimla runners actually use. Distances are approximate — park perimeters in particular vary by a few hundred metres depending on which path you take, so treat them as a guide and measure your own.
The Ridge and Mall Road
Vehicle-free through the centre, so it is safe running with a view — but it is short and it is never flat.
Jakhoo Hill
A short, brutally steep climb to the temple at the top of the town. A hill session in the truest sense.
Kufri and Chhota Shimla roads
For longer runs the roads east out of town climb and descend continuously. Altitude, traffic and weather all matter — plan conservatively.

Heat, air and when to actually go out
Climate. Cool to cold most of the year, with snow in winter. Summer is the peak season for both visitors and runners.
Air quality. Clean. The main hazard here is gradient and traffic on the narrow roads, not particulates.
The timing advice for Shimla — 06:30–08:30. altitude and gradient both mean effort-based pacing, not watch-based. — is not a preference, it is the difference between a session that helps and one that costs you two days. Running moves several times more air through your lungs than sitting does, so a bad-air morning is a disproportionately bad time to train hard outdoors. The air quality guide sets out what each CPCB band means for a runner, and running in Indian heat covers what humidity does to your pace.
